WHO WE ARE

A school rooted
in tradition

The Abhyasa School of Yoga is a yoga school hosts  Yoga Teacher Trainings at Independant Venues throught the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica.  The school offers teacher trainings and continued development for those who want to train to be certified teachers or those seeking to deepen their knowledge of yoga and the path of holistic wellbeing.

The school has a rich curriculum and maintains connections with the Indian tradition, incorporating modern holistic approaches of self-healing and awareness with ancient Indian technologies of liberation and enlightenment.

When you join our training for 30 days you will get the chance to be in a deep learning experience, whilst also having time for integration and to enjoy the natural surroundings.

Students will learn about yoga in a holistic way that includes all the layers of the body — physical, energetic, emotional, mental and spiritual. Understanding the ways that yoga becomes a way of life, not just what we do on the mat.

The Abhyasa School of Yoga is an independent yoga teacher training school, hosting our next training at Samasati Rainforest Retreat on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast. Samasati, the venue is laced with a rich history that honours the ancient traditions of yoga and the importance of retreat in the process of personal transformation.

This training will allow you to not only deepen your knowledge of yoga, but also allows you to be immersed in nature and absorb the healing vibration of the trees, wildlife, colour and ocean in this special corner of the world.

OUR VISION

To offer students trainings that are holistic, practical, accessible and traditional.

The Four Foundations

Earth · Water · Fire · Air

The foundations of the school are built on four elements — earth, water, fire and air. The fifth element of spirit/ether is present and is the carrier and support for these building blocks for life itself. When all the elements are balanced, we are able to move freely and optimally in our bodies, minds and soul.

Earth — Prthivī

Allows us to meet the body where it is, understand its wisdom and honour it with what it needs through movement, rest, food and supportive environment.

Water — Jala

Allows us to be present to the fluctuations of our emotions and of life itself. This gives us the capacity to be compassionate and fluid, and to bend in the ways that life will demand. To remain in heart and be expanded by our feeling centre.

Fire — Agni

Allows us to be disciplined, devotional and determined in our chosen path and gives us the capacity to be focussed, to grow spiritually and to have courage to meet what must be faced.

Air — Vāyu

Allows us to access the realm of intelligence and ideas, free from confines and constraints. We can feed or empty the mind so that we can benefit from the imagination and connection to higher ideals. To rise above the fray of life and find connection with the knowledge of Source itself.

Sequencing & Mindful Teaching

Carly Brown

Carly Brown is a trauma-informed yoga, breathwork + meditation instructor, and teacher trainer. She began her teaching career in 2015 in Atlanta, GA, and was trained in alignment-based hatha yoga, heavily influenced by the Anusara lineage. She went on to receive an additional 200-hour certification in yogaHour, a 300-hour advanced certification, and her Trauma-Informed Yoga facilitation certification. In 2018, after many hours of observation, study, and assistance, Carly began co-teaching 200-hour hatha yoga teacher trainings alongside her teachers and peers.

With her deep background in alignment-based asana, Carly enjoys the art and science of practicing the postures, exploring various alignment actions, and expanding one’s mobility and strength. This passion translates into a love for teaching the alignment principles, sequencing, asana-analysis, and teaching skills to budding yoga teachers.

At the same time, what matters most to Carly is the healing and transformative power of yoga–not only the asanas, but the ways yoga teaches us to engage with ourselves and the world. From her work facilitating trauma-informed yoga for vulnerable populations, she’s become extremely passionate about yoga’s potential to be a safe and empowering space for practitioners to heal and grow. She brings this passion into her public classes, and also teaches fellow yoga teachers/teachers in training how to bring this intention into their own offerings.

Within Carly’s facilitation, you will feel the freedom to listen to your body and discover your inner wisdom. ‎

Alignment & Foundations

Mariela Viquez

Mariela is a local yoga teacher, born and raised in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. She is a therapist with more than 15 years of experience working in modalities of Reiki and Cranial Sacral. Always interested in health and well being from a very young age, this started with getting her degree in Nutrition at University of San Jose but ultimately led her towards yoga and holistic therapies.

First studying Hatha Yoga at Yoga Mandir, and training as a teacher in yoga and meditation with Kasana - a metaphysical school, she has continually deepened her connection to the sources of yoga and to sharing this knowledge with both adults and children. After studying meditation and yoga she became a Reiki master and cranio sacral therapist, which she continues to offer 1:1.

A decade ago she found the Iyengar yoga method, which is her true passion now. Studying with Senior Iyengar Yoga Teacher, Chantal Gomez Jauffred, awakened to the power of the Iyengar method and she continues to study and share this practice and the deep wisdom of this lineage. Her approach is simply to guide her students so they can perform the yoga asanas in different ways and using different props with the basic parameters of structure, repetition and progressive advance. Different approaches help connect the student to all the layers of being, both physical and spiritual.

Mariela is a careful and compassionate guide, helping each student find good alignment with their own body and consciousness so they can inhabit their bodies more fully and freely.

Mantra, Sanskrit & Ashtanga

Adri Kamala

Adri has had a deep connection to movement since a young age. She began training in contemporary dance at the age of five and alongside this passion, carried a strong inner calling to explore the deeper dimensions of life and self-awareness. These two paths naturally led her to yoga, long before it became widely popular. Adri quickly fell in love with yoga at the age of 17 very soon after her first training, she started teaching, never realising that yoga would become both her life path and profession. Adri has studied anthropology, physiotherapy, metaphysics and has completed her 300hr Yoga Teacher Training, and since has taught on many teacher training programs - guiding approximately 100 teacher training students each year. She is also a trained Ayurveda consultant and therapist, regularly seeing clients.

Adri has trained with the Anusara Yoga School, developing a strong foundation in alignment-based practice, and spent many years immersed in Ashtanga Yoga. A life-changing journey to India in 2011 deeply influenced her path. There, she met her classical Tantra philosophy teacher and spent five months traveling, studying mantra and harmonium in each place she stayed, while also training in Ayurvedic massage.

Adri now lives settled on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, teaching weekly classes and future yoga teachers. Her teaching approach integrates alignment-based practice with a deep emphasis on self-awareness. Her love for Indian and the yogic tradition runs deep, and she considers it both an honor and a responsibility to share this practice with authenticity, respect, and heart.
